Job Description

Yoga Instructor

My current job is a great escape from the numbers and statistics involved in the business world. I can express my creative side and engage in a wonderful community.

My job in the studio starts 30 minutes before my classes when I tidy the studio, greet and check in students, and set the environment. As students come in, I ask for their names and make sure the class is paid for. If there are any new students, I set them up for success and make sure they feel comfortable in the new experience.

During the hour session, there is a lot I must do and account for, including:

  • My students
  • My sequence
  • The music
  • The heat and lights

My Students

I teach multiple classes a week to groups of up to 35 people. A room filled with 35 people is very overwhelming. It is my duty as a teacher to stay grounded and present to lead a successful and safe class. I enjoy teaching small classes as well. I have the chance to personalize the practice for my students and push everyone to reach their personal goals.

I consider the safety of my students to be the most important aspect of a class. I ensure students are safe by:

  • Learning their yoga level
  • Monitoring the class to ensure correct body positioning
  • Walking around to check in
  • Keeping an eye on students who are struggling

As an instructor, it is in my best interest to connect personally with my students. This allows me to support them to the best of my abilities and keeps them coming back to my classes.

I connect with my students by:

  • Learning their names
  • Chatting with them before/after class
  • Making them feel like a part of the community

Having regulars is important for my classes and the studio. It keeps the studio I work for running, as these regular students buy memberships and support other instructors when I’m not working.

My Sequence

As an instructor, I also must create a unique sequence to keep my students engaged,

ensure that it is accessible for all levels, and adhere to guidelines created by the company I work for. I create this sequence using formulas, ideas from my company, and moves I find online or in other classes. I like to change up my sequence every week, while still incorporating familiar elements.

The Music

An important part of the sequence is the music. I time specific moves to songs, beats, and vibes. I use my playlist to keep track of time during a class, and I am able to respect my students by getting them in and out of class by set times. I change the playlist for class once every 2 weeks, so I try to keep songs up to date with current trends. This is a task I take on outside of my typical work hours, but it is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job.

Some of the current songs on my playlist include:

  • Taste - Sabrina Carpenter
  • 360 - Charli XCX
  • Die Young - Kesha
  • bye - Ariana Grande
  • Butterflies - Kacey Musgraves

As you can see, these all have a very different vibe and bpm. I use slower songs, such as Butterflies, for the beginning and end of class and faster songs, such as Die Young, for the middle when it is the most intense.

The Heat and Lights

Another important aspect of a class is the environment. I control the environment my students experience mainly through music, heat, and lights.

The classes I teach can get hot, up to 97 degrees! This makes students sweat and feel like they are getting a good workout in. I feel that classes without heat miss something, so I keep the heat at a certain level when I teach.

I play around with the lights to match the mood of classes. I tend to dim the lights when I start or class and keep them brighter in the middle. I also incorporate disco lights during special classes to make it even more enjoyable!

My job helps me to stay creative and connected. I’ve met many friends through yoga and share my passion with tons of students. I must be confident in leading to perform to the best of my abilities.

Passive Sentences – 2.7%

Flesch Reading Score – 71.3

Flesch Grade Level – 7.1

  1. This is really cool - I did not realize that there was so much attention to detail put in running a yoga class. As someone who has never done yoga before its pretty crazy to me how hot the classes get. I would love to get an example or maybe you use a “comparison” to explain how you manage to make classes easy for beginners but still engaging enough for more experienced people. Also, I’m not sure if the formatting is just weird on my ipad but each paragraph is just a really long line.

  2. One of my cousins is also a yoga instructor so I've been told how much work it actually is. I like how you broke down what each session is like and what goes into each session behind the scenes. Also, the formatting is weird on my end as well. It comes out as one long line instead of paragraphs.

  3. I really liked the multiple bulleted list, gives great simplified version of the tasks required for your job. I also loved reading about the process you do in order to create a calm and safe space for others, really gives insight to how much care and detail goes into the process.nAlso to mention formatting, it runs long on my computer. I would also separate the bulleted lists and titles a bit more so its clearer to read.

  5. Hi Kristin- You have a super cool job! I practiced yoga for ~2 years along with taking yoga for beginners and advanced yoga at USC. Creating sequences is no joke, and I would love to hear more about how you go about designing the sequence, especially the formulas you mentioned.

  6. Wow, I never took into account how many behind-the-scenes details and requirements there are to teaching yoga- that takes a lot of memorization and commitment to remember everyone’s names in just one fleeting class! Also, tailoring class to fit everyone level, as well as adhering to the guidelines created by the company. There is so much to keep in mind!
