WHO YOU ARE MATTERS

Who am I?

I come from a small town about an hour outside of NYC. Warwick, known for its apples, ski resorts, and farms, was the perfect place to grow up and join a community.

In the near future, I plan on staying in the LA area, ideally Culver City, Hermosa Beach, or Marina Del Rey. Fun fact about all of these places: they have a Corepower Yoga studio, so I'll be able to continue teaching yoga like I do here at USC!

On the other hand, I might move to Europe!  I have always been passionate about travel, and now is a great opportunity for me to make the move.

My plan is to find a career in Marketing or Human Resources that allows me to either stay in Los Angeles, or move to Europe. I'm passionate about sports, non-profits, and entertainment and mainly focused on those industries!

When following my dreams and ambitions, I am stubborn and persistent. I get this trait from both of my parents. All three of us are willing to fight for things we believe in or want.

Unlike my parents, I am very open minded. There are many activities I would do and people I would talk to that my parents tend to avoid. While I am stubborn like them, I try not to close myself off to new or scary experiences.

As a perfectionist, I have developed rather high expectations for myself. My family has also raised me with high expectations of their own. I operate under a blend of mine and my families expectations.

As I mentioned earlier, I am a yoga teacher! A role model of mine is another teacher, Amber. Amber is always positive, pursues opportunities off the beaten path, and isn't afraid to market herself authentically. I am in awe of the opportunities she has gotten, and I have respect for how hard she works as a teacher and professional.

Another role model of mine is my late grandfather, Papa. As a member of the Choctaw tribe, he loved nature and shared this love with me. We used to sit outside of his cabin in Michigan and watch the hummingbirds. I loved how fast they were, as I was an aspiring track runner myself. He would tell me stories about his experiences growing up. Because of these fond memories of my Papa, I have a special connection with hummingbirds.

Leading up to his cabin is a dirt road surrounded by blackberry bushes. I have many joyful memories of picking these blackberries with my whole family. Sometimes, my Papa would hide in the bushes and jump out to scare me. Sometimes, we would run into a patch of poison ivy and spend the next 4 days itchy and regretful. But all of these scares and scratches were solved by the homemade blackberry cobbler my grandma would make with our findings.

It sounds you had an awesome and wholesome childhood. I loved the story of your grandmother making blackberry cobbler from the bushes around their home. I hope she still makes them for you!

  3. I love your passion for yoga, especially your desire to teach other people it! It is great to see that you not only have a passion but are also willing to share that passion with others and build a community. My mom has been really into yoga lately, so maybe I should recommend her to you as a client haha.

I've been to Europe too, and I would highly recommend traveling over there. The cities, people, and cultures are different yet similar, and I think you would love the experience of going out of the country and meeting new people.

  5. Hi Kristen- I love hummingbirds too! I had not seen them before coming to USC, but they are constantly outside of the house I live in here. I think it is the type of flowers we have. I also admire how you have set forth several professional paths that would make you happy. I think Europe sounds so exciting and fun while young!

  8. Hi Kristin! Thank you for sharing this special blog with our class. Your choice of images make this such an engaging read and I loved learning more about you.

I'm from Torrance which is not too far from Hermosa Beach. I'll have to say that Hermosa is one of my absolute favorite beach towns in the South Bay and there's a huge wellness community for you there. It's great to hear that you want to continue teaching yoga and I'm sure that you'll succeed while thriving by the beach!

Also, love to see your Pisces placement. All my best friends are water signs and they each have this kind, empathetic nature to them. They're also very in tune with nature, especially water, so I loved reading about your nature experiences with your Papa.

Looking forward to seeing you in class!
